Civil defense forces in the Gaza Strip have reported that their rescue teams have saved several displaced families whose tents were flooded due to heavy rainfall in the ‘Al-Mawasi’ area, located in southern Gaza.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent from the ‘Al-Nasirat’ camp revealed that residents continue to suffer from the consequences of the torrential rains. Many were unable to properly partake in their pre-dawn meal last night, as they were busy draining water from their tents. The volume of aid requests to civil defense far exceeds the operational capacity of these forces to respond to the victims. On the other hand the military escalation by the Israeli regime including bombings and the destruction of homes continues unabated. Hospital sources in ‘Al-Ma’madani’ reported that two individuals were injured due to gunfire from occupying forces in the ‘Shujaiya’ neighborhood of Gaza City. Additionally Israeli forces targeted areas in eastern Khan Younis western Rafah and eastern ‘Al-Bureij’ camp with air and artillery strikes.
Volker Turk the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized that the situation in Gaza remains catastrophic and humanitarian aid sent is nowhere near sufficient compared to the scale of needs. Turk warned of the potential for ‘ethnic cleansing’ in Gaza and the West Bank asserting that Palestinians are suffering not only from the fire of occupying forces but also from hunger and disease. He stressed that any sustainable solution must be based on a two-state solution.
