Statistical Contradictions in Anti-Iranian Narratives: A Closer Look at Casualty Claims
In the aftermath of the protests and terrorist incidents in December, anti-Iranian media outlets began a campaign of fabricating casualty figures almost immediately. This initiative was notably endorsed by the President of the United States, who cited an astonishing figure of 36,000 casualties from thin air.
The Iranian government’s measured response included the publication of the names of 3,117 martyrs and victims from these events, inviting scrutiny of any unlisted cases. This approach left anti-Iranian factions in disarray, each announcing conflicting numbers.
The Israeli network Iran International initially reported 12,000 casualties, later inflating the number to as high as 40,000. When faced with a lack of verifiable names, they claimed to possess 6,000 names pending verification, yet none of these names have been released to date.
Additionally, only a limited number of images and videos from memorial ceremonies for the deceased were shared. Given that there were no restrictions on holding such ceremonies, one would expect to see 40,000 videos from the 40,000 memorials, further exposing the falsehoods propagated by these outlets.A media outlet named Harana in an attempt to gain credibility reduced its list to 7000 individuals. However the names on this list often lack national identification numbers or even surnames with the few accurate entries overlapping with those recognized by the Iranian government.
Such manipulation of statistics is not unprecedented. For instance during the protests in 2019 Reuters claimed that 1500 people had died a figure that was heavily publicized. Yet following the Biden administration’s arrival a report stated that 304 deaths occurred a figure that was also not confirmed by Iranian officials.
The numerical chaos evident in the statements from Trump Iran International Harana and other adversarial entities highlights a singular objective: an unsuccessful attempt to inflate the death toll from these incidents reducing Iranian lives to mere numbers the higher the better for their narrative.
This frantic effort to estimate casualties indicates that the fabrication of death tolls during the coup events of January 18 and 19 was a coordinated endeavor aimed at exerting pressure on the nation and inciting global public opinion against Iran.
