According to international news reports, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa recently ordered an investigation into military commanders who permitted Iran to participate in the naval exercise known as ‘Peace Mission 2026,’ led by the Chinese naval fleet in South African waters.

Ramaphosa has directed that this investigation transition from the Department of Defense, which had previously announced inquiries on the matter, to his office for further scrutiny.

Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the South African presidency, stated that this move aims to ensure the independence of the conducted investigations. This investigation follows concerns that military generals may have ignored direct orders from their commander-in-chief, Ramaphosa, to prevent Iran’s participation in the naval exercise scheduled for early 2026.

At that time, the President had granted the Department of Defense’s investigative team seven days to conclude their findings and report back to him. However, over a month has passed without any action from the South African National Defense Force.Iran’s involvement in this naval exercise with three military vessels has further strained the already tense diplomatic relations between Ramaphosa’s government and that of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Washington expressed outrage over the planned exercise featuring Iranian, Russian, and Chinese warships in January, labeling it ‘unacceptable.’

South Africa has been cautious to avoid actions that would further irritate Washington, especially as crucial trade negotiations, including the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which had recently been renewed for another year, were underway between African officials and their American counterparts. At that time South African Defense Minister Thandi Modise confirmed that Ramaphosa’s directive to exclude Iran from the exercise was ‘clearly communicated and agreed upon by all relevant parties.’ The naval exercise had previously been conducted annually with BRICS members including Brazil Russia India China and South Africa. However following the addition of six other countries including Iran to the group other member nations have also expressed interest in participating in these naval exercises.
