The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz has reported the release of military documents that indicate Israeli forces employed methods of intimidation terrorism and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians during the 1948 war. These documents which were recently declassified reveal that some commanders and troops resorted to violent tactics to compel Palestinians to abandon their homes.
According to the report one document cites Maxim Cohen the then-commander of the Carmeli Brigade stating that the evacuation of villages was achieved through instilling fear among the residents. This historical account sheds light on the controversial strategies utilized during a pivotal moment in the region’s history.
