Israeli Leadership’s Denial: A Reflection on October 7 Events
Israeli leaders exhibit a troubling refusal to acknowledge reality akin to children in denial. Retired General Yitzhak Brik of the Israeli army has emphasized that Prime Minister Netanyahu cannot evade accountability for the events of October 7. These incidents were not mere mistakes or oversights; they stemmed from a deliberate choice to disregard the growing power of adversaries and to dismiss critical reports from advisory bodies such as the Internal Security Council with contempt.
Brik elaborated that when security intelligence structures raised alarms Netanyahu opted to remain willfully ignorant believing that Hamas had not enhanced its preparations and aimed to maintain the status quo. The result was a catastrophic breakdown on October 7 which left Israel reeling.
What is even more astonishing than the security failure is the continued public support for Netanyahu. It raises the question of how he remains ahead in polls despite numerous failures. Brik questioned whether Israelis lack the ability to distinguish between reality and propaganda. This may reflect a psychological defense mechanism of a nation reluctant to confront the complexities of growth and realism preferring instead to rely on comforting narratives presented by a familiar authority figure even if they lead the nation to the brink of disaster.
