The Rising Costs of Ramadan Meals Amidst Conflict in Gaza

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has transformed the simple act of breaking fast during Ramadan into a struggle for survival. The genocidal actions of the occupying regime have led to severe hardships for families in the region, turning their dining tables into battlegrounds for sustenance.

Recent statistics reveal staggering price increases for essential goods due to the war, with some items experiencing price hikes of up to 700%. Even after a ceasefire, the costs of basic commodities remain significantly elevated, showing a 100% increase compared to pre-war prices.

For instance, the price of chicken has surged by 92%, frozen fish by 130%, red meat by 100%, and eggs by 170%. These alarming figures highlight the financial strain on families, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.Research indicates that a family of six now requires 150 shekels for an iftar meal a stark rise from the 79 shekels needed before the conflict marking a 90% increase in expenses. Additionally the cost of a pre-dawn meal or suhoor for an average family has escalated to 31.5 shekels up from just 18.6 shekels prior to the war reflecting a 69% increase.

Overall the daily expense for iftar and suhoor for a family has risen to 182 shekels compared to 97 shekels before the outbreak of hostilities. This financial burden underscores the dire circumstances faced by families in Gaza as they navigate the challenges of Ramadan amid ongoing conflict.
