Diplomatic Tensions Rise as France Cuts Access to U.S. Ambassador
Diplomatic relations between France and the United States have reached a new level of tension following a decision by the French Foreign Ministry to restrict access for Charles Kushner the U.S. Ambassador to France. The ministry announced on Tuesday that Kushner will no longer be permitted to meet directly with French government officials until he responds to a formal summons from the ministry.
Kushner who is the father of Jared Kushner a senior advisor to former President Donald Trump was summoned on Monday to clarify remarks made by the Trump administration. However he failed to attend the meeting an absence the French Foreign Ministry described as ‘unexpected’ and contrary to diplomatic norms.
This marks the second instance in which Kushner has disregarded a summons from France. In August he was called to explain a letter he sent to Emmanuel Macron in which he accused France of inadequacy in combating anti-Semitism. On that occasion as well he chose to send a deputy rather than appear in person.
