The Role of Turkey and Israel in the Exploitation of Syria’s Water Resources

Amidst a severe drought and the actions of Israel and Turkey the Syrian population faces a critical challenge regarding water security. The existing water resources in Syria are insufficient to meet the needs of approximately 26 million citizens.

A significant issue for Syria is that nearly one-third of its water resources originate from neighboring countries specifically Turkey Lebanon and occupied Palestine. Turkey has evaded adherence to international agreements established in 1987 with Syria and in 1997 with the United Nations. Currently due to its geographical proximity and unique political relations with the new government Turkey perceives itself as free to seize Syrian water resources.

Furthermore while drought is a natural factor contributing to water scarcity external influences exacerbate the water crisis in Syria. These factors severely restrict Syrians’ access to water perpetuating their thirst. This predicament is not limited to southern Syria and Israel’s role in the exploitation of the country’s water resources; it also encompasses northern Syria where Turkey plays a pivotal role.
