Israel Emerges as the Leading Threat to Journalists in 2025

In 2025 Israel has tragically become the leading perpetrator against journalists worldwide accounting for the deaths of two-thirds of the total 129 journalists and media activists killed that year. This alarming statistic has rendered the previous year the most deadly for the press in recorded history.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has identified the impunity enjoyed by those committing crimes against journalists as a key factor contributing to the rising number of fatalities in recent years. The committee is advocating for extensive reforms in the handling of cases involving journalists including the implementation of targeted sanctions against those responsible for these atrocities.

Jodie Ginsburg the executive director of this committee has labeled attacks on media as a primary indicator of broader assaults on various freedoms. She emphasized that when journalists are murdered for reporting the news it puts all of society at risk.
