Winston Churchill: The Controversial Legacy of a War Leader
The statue of Winston Churchill the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was defaced in central London with the phrase ‘war criminal Zionist.’ Churchill who served as Prime Minister during two critical periods notably led Britain through World War II and was an early supporter of Zionism identifying himself as an ‘old Zionist.’ His backing for the Balfour Declaration of 1917 which advocated for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine marked a significant point in his political stance.
In 1937 while testifying before the Peel Commission Churchill defended Zionist settlement during a time when Britain was contemplating the partition of Palestine amidst the Arab uprising. He asserted that he could not accept that any ‘error’ had been made against the Arab population characterizing the influx of Jewish settlers as a replacement of a ‘stronger and superior race’ over what he referred to as a ‘lesser manifestation.’
