This case revolves around the illegal use of advanced spyware to monitor over 90 political figures, journalists, business leaders, and senior military officials in Greece.<\/p>\n
Among those convicted is Tal Dilian, a former Israeli military officer and founder of the spyware company Intellexa. This company was responsible for marketing and selling the Predator spyware in Greece. Alongside Dilian, his associate and two former executives of the company have also been sentenced.According to the judge’s ruling, these individuals, who were absent during the trial, were found guilty of violating the confidentiality of telephone communications, repeatedly manipulating personal data storage systems, and illegally accessing information systems or data.<\/p>\n
However, the court has allowed these four convicts to remain free pending the appeal filed by their lawyers.’Predator’ is an extremely advanced spyware that enables hackers to access messages and images, as well as remotely activate the microphones and cameras of smartphones.<\/p>\n
The crisis began in early 2022 when Thanasis Koukakis, a Greek investigative journalist, revealed that the Greek National Intelligence Service had spied on him, with the Predator spyware installed on his phone. Shortly thereafter, Nikos Androulakis, the current leader of the Socialist Party and then a Member of the European Parliament, also disclosed attempts to hack his phone.This scandal led to the resignation of high-ranking officials including Grigoris Dimitriadis a close aide to the Prime Minister and the head of Greece’s intelligence agency. Although Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote this issue severely damaged his government’s credibility.<\/p>\n
In July 2024 the Greek Supreme Court acquitted intelligence agencies and political officials of any wrongdoing a decision that sparked outrage among victims and human rights organizations.
