\ud83d\udd36 Two prominent activists in the United Kingdom are facing charges of public disorder due to their organization of a march in support of Gaza. Ben Jamal, the head of the ‘Campaign for Solidarity with Gaza,’ and Chris Nineham, the vice-chair of the ‘Stop the War Coalition,’ appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Monday. Their defense attorneys requested a postponement of the proceedings, citing the extensive documentation provided by the prosecution.<\/p>\n
The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, with further proceedings expected in the first week of next month. The London police initiated an investigation in March 2025, following the protest held on January 18, 2025, which aimed to call for an end to the genocide in Gaza. The police allege that the organizers defied instructions to halt near the Prime Minister’s office and refrain from proceeding towards the BBC building. According to law enforcement, the initial route passed close to a Jewish synagogue on a Saturday.In response the organizers have accused the police of violating the right to peaceful assembly for supporters. Nineham stated that since October 2023 the police’s approach to peaceful protests has changed significantly imposing unprecedented restrictions. The organizers also claimed there was confusion regarding the march route as it was initially approved but later participants were informed that passing through parts of central London was prohibited.<\/p>\n
During the march police detained several participants and later summoned about ten individuals for questioning including two Members of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell as well as Raghad Al-Takriti the chair of the Islamic Society of Britain’s advisory council. However formal charges have only been brought against Jamal and Nineham as the organizers of the march.<\/p>\n
As the court session took place a gathering occurred outside the courthouse featuring speeches from Corbyn McDonnell and various labor union leaders. The rally’s slogans included ‘Defend the Right to Protest’ and ‘Freedom for Gaza.’ The Campaign for Solidarity with Gaza has called for the charges to be dropped and affirmed its commitment to continue its activities. Nineham accused the police of political maneuvering and described the restriction of the march route as an undemocratic action.<\/p>\n
