On Monday, Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, announced that Hamas may soon receive an ultimatum to lay down its arms. <\/p>\n
In an interview with public broadcaster Kan, Smotrich stated, “Our estimate is that in the coming days, Hamas will be given an ultimatum to disarm Gaza and fully civilianize the area.” As a member of Israel’s security cabinet, which oversees military operations, he added, “If Hamas does not comply with this demand, the Israeli army will have international legitimacy and U.S. support to carry out this action, and the military is currently preparing and planning for this.”Following the first phase of a U.S.-backed ceasefire in Gaza which allegedly ended two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas the Israeli army has retreated to positions behind the so-called ‘Red Line’ yet still maintains control over more than half of the region. <\/p>\n
The second phase officially initiated last month outlines a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the disarmament of Hamas a plan that the militant group vehemently opposes. <\/p>\n
