An informed source stated that, according to the internal regulations of the movement, a body comprising over eighty members from the general council will elect the movement’s leader and political bureau members.Every four years, the consultative council members are elected from three regions of the movement: the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the diaspora. A Hamas official mentioned to France Press that the movement has concluded its internal elections in these three regions and has reached the final stage for selecting the political bureau chief.

The competition is now solely between two distinguished leaders, Khaled Mashal and Khalil al-Hayya. The official added that Hamas will issue a statement immediately after the election of its leader, likely to be released during Ramadan.Khaled Mashal, who is based outside Palestinian territories, was born in the village of Silwad in the occupied West Bank in 1956 and has previously served as the head of the political bureau. Many Hamas officials regard him as pragmatic and moderate.

Khalil al-Hayya, born in Gaza City on November 5, 1960, currently leads the movement in the Gaza Strip and heads Hamas’s negotiating committee. Sources within the movement indicate that he enjoys the support of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza.Following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas, in July 2024, Yahya Sinwar took over the leadership until he was martyred in October of the same year during clashes with Israeli forces in Rafah, southern Gaza. Subsequently, Hamas formed a leadership council comprising five prominent figures, led by Mohammad Darwish, the head of the general council of Hamas.Israel has labeled Yahya Sinwar as the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack. Two sources within Hamas emphasized that the future head of the movement will manage the political bureau for one year, which is considered an exceptional electoral term, after which the movement will conduct another election for a new term spanning four years for its consultative and leadership structures.Sources did not provide information regarding the number of individuals entitled to vote within the movement or the electoral mechanisms under the increasingly challenging security conditions that Hamas faces having endured significant blows from the Israeli army during the conflict.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) is entering the final phase of its internal elections to select its political bureau chief, with the contest narrowing down to two prominent leaders: Khaled Mashal and Khalil al-Hayya.

[64

post-22593","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-palestine
["GET
