In a statement reported by the Shehab news agency on Sunday, Hazem Qassem, the spokesperson for the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, reacted to Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments about forming a new axis composed of certain Arab countries. He stated that such a proposal reflects blatant disregard for the significant role of key Arab nations in the region and poses a direct threat to their strategic interests.
Qassem emphasized that this approach illustrates a domineering mindset and an attempt to impose a form of regional leadership through force, while the Israeli regime remains an outsider to the region, its history, and its identity. The Hamas spokesperson further noted that the ongoing developments represent an effort to realign coalitions and regional axes in favor of Israeli interests, rather than addressing the aspirations and needs of the peoples in the region.
He also pointed out that the explicit support from the United States for these approaches encourages Israel to continue policies that fundamentally contradict the interests of Arab nations. In light of the recent conflict in the Gaza Strip, Qassem remarked that these movements arise from a backdrop of weakened Arab systems following the recent war against Gaza.
He urged Arab countries to be vigilant regarding the implications of these plans and their impact on regional security and stability. Qassem stressed that any coalition founded on the disregard for Palestinian rights will not lead to stability but rather escalate tensions and conflicts. He concluded by asserting that regardless of how the configuration of coalitions and regional axes may change, the Palestinian people and resistance forces will continue to defend their rights.
These statements followed Netanyahu’s announcement of efforts to establish a new coalition in the region, which he claimed would counter what he termed the ‘Shia axis’ and the ’emerging Sunni axis.’
Netanyahu stated that this new axis is being designed with the participation of India and several Arab, African, and Mediterranean countries. He added ‘We will create an integrated system that resembles a hexagonal coalition around or within the Middle East.’ According to him this system will include India Arab countries African nations and Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Cyprus.
Netanyahu also mentioned that other Asian countries will be involved in this plan although he did not specify their names.
