According to a report from the Committee to Protect Journalists, 2025 witnessed the tragic loss of 129 journalists worldwide, making it the second deadliest year on record for media professionals. This New York-based organization revealed that Israel was responsible for two-thirds of these fatalities, marking the ongoing conflict in Gaza as the deadliest for press members since the committee began tracking data in 1992.

The report, released on Wednesday, highlighted that Israeli forces were directly responsible for the deaths of 86 journalists, over 60% of whom were Palestinian reporters covering events in Gaza. However, the most catastrophic incident occurred in Yemen, where Israeli airstrikes on two newspaper offices claimed the lives of 31 journalists and reporters.Among the 47 fatalities classified by the Committee as targeted killings—the highest number in a decade—Israel was implicated in 81% of these cases. The organization emphasized that there has been a lack of transparent investigations into these incidents, with no accountability for those responsible.

The Israeli military vehemently denied the allegations from the Committee to Protect Journalists, asserting that they do not intentionally harm journalists or their families. They described the report as being based on unverified claims, ambiguous data, and predetermined conclusions, without considering the complexities of combat or the military’s efforts to minimize civilian casualties. These findings emerge amidst widespread international condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza with Western Jerusalem facing ongoing accusations of war crimes and genocide against the Palestinian population. A report from the United Nations Human Rights Office released last week raised alarms about potential ‘ethnic cleansing’ and stated that intensified attacks and destruction of civilian infrastructure appear aimed at the permanent displacement of Palestinians. The report also highlighted a pervasive culture of impunity for violations of international law.

Israel has rejected these accusations maintaining that it does not deliberately target civilians and that its operations are focused on eliminating Hamas members. The Israeli military initiated its campaign in Gaza in October 2023 and according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health over 72000 individuals have been killed since the conflict began.
