UN Commissioner Warns of Permanent Demographic Changes in West Bank and Gaza

Volker Turk the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights delivered a significant address today highlighting Israel’s intentions to implement a ‘permanent demographic change’ in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. His remarks come amidst rising concerns regarding potential ethnic cleansing in these regions.

In his speech before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva Turk emphasized that Israel’s actions particularly military operations resulting in the displacement of residents are strategically aimed at altering the demographic composition of these territories. He stated ‘It appears that the cumulative actions of Israel are designed to create a permanent demographic shift in Gaza and the West Bank raising serious concerns about the possibility of ethnic cleansing.’

Turk specifically pointed to the ongoing military operations in northern West Bank that have persisted for over a year leading to the displacement of approximately 32000 individuals. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for international attention and action regarding the human rights situation in these areas.
