Impact of War on Sports in Gaza: Over 1000 Athletes Lost and Infrastructure Devastated

In the wake of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Olympic Committee has reported a staggering loss of 1,007 members from the sports community, including players and coaches, who have tragically lost their lives. The first casualty was Omar Abushawish, who was killed while playing on the beach in Al-Zawayda, with the most recent loss being international referee Khidr Fayyad.

Asad Al-Majdalawi, the committee’s vice president, revealed in a press conference that numerous stadiums and club facilities have been completely destroyed. This destruction has led to the suspension of competitions and internal activities, leaving thousands of young athletes deprived of the opportunity to engage in sports. Alarmingly, some sports venues have been repurposed as detention centers during the ground assaults.Journalists and athletes who have experienced the war in Gaza have emphasized the importance of documenting and conveying these losses to the global public. They have warned that the destruction of sports infrastructure poses a significant threat to the future of athletics in the region.

Fadi Hijazi a sports journalist noted that sports activities have either come to a complete halt or are being conducted under severely limited conditions with many players having been killed or injured. He stressed the urgent need for support to rebuild the infrastructure resume competitions and implement youth programs. Jihad Al-Rantisi captain of the Deir Al-Balah Services Club expressed that his professional journey is nearly at an end due to the war which has led to the loss of teammates stadiums and training facilities halting both practice and competitive activities. He voiced hope that with the reconstruction of stadiums and clubs sports can be revitalized once again.
