Israeli Parliament Approves Controversial Western Wall Bill
The Knesset of the Israeli regime has passed the contentious Western Wall bill during its first reading achieving a narrow majority with 56 votes in favor and 47 against. This legislation grants exclusive control of the Western Wall to ultra-Orthodox rabbis allowing strictly religious Jews to worship independently at this significant site.
Proposed by Avi Maoz an extremist representative from the Shas party the bill has sparked considerable debate. It categorizes any worship practices that deviate from rabbinical guidelines including non-Orthodox forms of worship as a ‘profanation of the sacred.’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was notably absent during the voting session. This legislative move occurs amidst rising tensions between Netanyahu’s government one of the most right-wing administrations in Israeli history and the Supreme Court which the government has sought to limit since taking power in 2022.
