In a significant diplomatic move, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has officially landed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to engage in vital discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.
Herzog announced his arrival via social media, stating, “I have arrived in Addis Ababa this Wednesday morning for an official visit, where I will hold important meetings with Ethiopian officials to bolster our bilateral ties.”The Israeli President’s office confirmed that during this visit, Herzog is set to meet with President Abiy Ahmed and leaders of the Ethiopian Jewish community.
This visit comes at a time when Israel is actively working to expand its influence in Africa, particularly through strengthened ties with Ethiopia.Herzog’s trip follows closely on the heels of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to Addis Ababa, where he condemned Israel’s recognition of the self-declared Somaliland region during a joint press conference.
Erdoğan emphasized the need to prevent the Horn of Africa from becoming a battleground for foreign powers and urged regional countries to formulate their own solutions to local issues. In February 2025 Ethiopia and Israel signed a cooperation agreement focused on energy water and technology paving the way for Israeli companies to participate in Ethiopia’s water infrastructure development projects.
