India’s Strategic Support for Israel: A New Era of Defense Cooperation

According to a report from Yedioth Ahronoth, India’s Prime Minister is set to bolster support for Israel in future conflicts. A prominent Zionist analyst indicated that the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to the occupied territories will elevate bilateral relations to a status of ‘strategic special relations.’ This partnership is expected to encompass deep security collaboration, granting India access to classified information, and potentially supplying weapons to Israel during wartime.

Itamar Eichner, a political analyst for Yedioth Ahronoth, noted that Prime Minister Modi will arrive in the occupied territories today (Wednesday), deliver a speech in the Knesset, and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog. The two nations are anticipated to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding cooperation across various sectors, with a particular focus on security matters.A significant aspect of this agreement is the establishment of a confidentiality mechanism which will allow India to access classified information including Israel’s air defense systems particularly the Israeli laser air defense system known as ‘Iron Beam.’ Modi previously identified this mission as a cornerstone of India’s missile defense strategy.

A senior political source informed Yedioth Ahronoth that this new framework will enhance the operational flexibility of Israel’s security apparatus enabling both countries to rely on one another during critical situations. The source further elaborated that if Israel faces a similar arms embargo as it did during the Gaza conflict under former President Joe Biden it may turn to India for defense supplies.
