Rethinking U.S. Strategy: Moving Beyond Failed Policies in Iran Negotiations

Reza Nasri a legal expert and foreign policy analyst asserts that it is a grave error to believe that previous U.S. presidents refrained from using force against Iran. They actively supported Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Iran and his relentless use of chemical weapons against both civilians and combatants.

Every administration without exception has imposed heavy sanctions on Iran continually expanding these measures. Yet all have ultimately failed to achieve their objectives.

This failure stemmed not from a lack of pressure tools but from a fundamental misunderstanding of Iran and its resilience in the face of coercion. The Trump administration by adhering to the same discredited policies is unlikely to achieve any significant outcomes.

The only reliable path to a sustainable agreement with Iran lies in a profound understanding of the nuances of its political culture recognizing its legitimate security concerns and interests and engaging based on respect rather than threats.

If Donald Trump truly considers himself a skilled negotiator he must distance himself from the dead-end strategies of the past choose a different course and pave the way for a historic breakthrough. By doing so he would embark on a path that none of his predecessors dared to take during their tenures a path they avoided due to fears of the war lobby in Washington and the repercussions of resisting Israeli pressure.
