Additionally, Israeli troops launched attacks on their own controlled areas in eastern Khan Younis, targeting positions in western Rafah in southern Gaza and eastern Al-Bureij camp in the central region.Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that the situation in Gaza remains catastrophic, with humanitarian aid allowed into the region insufficient compared to the overwhelming needs.
Turk warned of concerns regarding potential ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank, highlighting that Palestinians are being killed under Israeli military assaults while grappling with hunger and illness. He emphasized that any sustainable solution must be based on the establishment of two states living side by side with dignity and equal rights, in accordance with UN resolutions and international law.Bezalel Smotrich the Israeli finance minister asserted that his government remains committed to the goal of destroying Hamas providing US President Donald Trump an opportunity to dismantle the group in his own way.
He added that if Trump fails to eliminate Hamas the Israeli army with international and American support would have the legitimacy needed to carry out this operation.
Smotrich threatened that Israel would soon issue a warning to Hamas to surrender its weapons headquarters and tunnels; failure to comply would result in Tel Aviv occupying new areas in Gaza. He also stressed that Israel ultimately intends to occupy Gaza and establish Jewish settlements there.
