According to a report from the news agency, Bassam Zaqout, the medical aid director in Gaza, has declared that the health sector is in a state of ‘deadly stagnation.’ This dire situation is attributed to the persistent blockade and the lack of basic necessities.
Zaqout emphasized that rising poverty and unemployment, coupled with the extensive gathering of displaced individuals in tents, have deepened the health crisis. He noted that approximately 50% of cancer patients require treatment outside of Gaza, while early detection facilities and equipment are unavailable within the region. Furthermore, 70% of patients suffering from chronic illnesses face a shortage of medications or are forced to use less effective alternatives.
Zaqout also raised alarms about the risk of infectious diseases spreading, stating that the destruction of sewage infrastructure and declining vaccination rates could lead to widespread epidemics. He reported a severe water and food crisis coinciding with the arrival of Ramadan, indicating that many families rely on ‘takiyeh’ and free food distribution centers, which are no longer able to meet the population’s needs.
The medical aid director warned that hospitals in the region are on the verge of ceasing operations due to fuel shortages and a lack of spare parts for generators.Zaqout called for immediate action from the international community to prevent widespread famine and the complete collapse of the health and environmental systems.
It is noteworthy that the Israeli regime continues to violate ceasefires in Gaza, obstructing humanitarian aid from reaching the city and perpetuating a policy of starvation against the Palestinian people. The Hamas movement officially announced on October 17 2024 the achievement of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the exchange of prisoners.
The Israeli army also confirmed on October 18 2024 the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza yet continues to repeatedly violate it.
