Berlin Film Festival Highlights Palestinian Voices Amidst Political Turmoil

The recent Berlin Film Festival served as a significant platform for Palestinian voices with filmmakers openly criticizing the policies of governments allied with Israel. The event’s closing ceremony marking the seventy-sixth edition of the festival emerged as one of the most politically charged occasions in its history characterized by strong anti-Israeli sentiments.

Marie-Rose Osta the director of the short film “Once Upon a Time a Child” from Lebanon articulated the plight of children in Gaza and across Palestine emphasizing their vulnerability. She stated “Children in Gaza throughout Palestine and in my Lebanon do not possess a superpower to shield them from Israeli bombs.”

Abdullah Al-Khatib awarded for his film “Chronicles of a Siege” also made a powerful statement by raising the Palestinian flag on stage. He proclaimed “Palestinians will be liberated and one day we will host a grand film festival in the heart of Gaza and other Palestinian cities.”
