According to reports, the Israeli Army Radio announced today that it is significantly enhancing a unit within its General Staff responsible for protecting senior officials and military delegations, amid concerns over potential retaliatory operations from Iran and its allies following assassinations during the 12-day conflict.
This Hebrew media outlet claimed that two years after the conflict, during which Israel targeted leaders of organizations in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as high-ranking Iranian security officials, the General Staff’s operations center concluded that there was a pressing need to bolster the unit responsible for ensuring the security of senior military officers and delegations abroad by several hundred percent. The Israeli Army Radio reported that this unit, which has been relatively small and operated under a lieutenant colonel, mainly consisted of permanent security guards alongside a large number of reserve forces. Previously, it primarily ensured the safety of the current and former Chief of Staff, and not all delegations outside the occupied territories received adequate protection.
In light of recent assessments, the decision was made to significantly increase the personnel within this unit, and for the first time, a substantial number of security guards will be recruited from among conscript soldiers. The Israeli media stated that the first group of conscript soldiers will soon be hired to alleviate the pressure on reserve soldiers currently in the unit. Concurrently the rank of the unit’s commander will be elevated to brigadier general.
As reported due to the heightened threat level faced by many Israeli military officers and the growing concerns regarding Iranian and allied retaliatory operations the number of officers receiving security protection has been increased.
The Israeli Army Radio further noted that one senior official who managed the war efforts remarked “We have stocked our magazines for the next 100 years for revenge against our enemies.” Some officers will continue to receive security support even after retiring from the Israeli Army.
