The Unraveling Narrative: U.S. Diplomacy and the Iranian Opposition

Recent comments from U.S. President Joe Biden’s representative in nuclear negotiations Robert Wittekoff have sparked discussions regarding the relevance of Reza Pahlavi to U.S. policy on Iran. In an interview with Fox News Wittekoff emphasized that the complexities surrounding Iran are more aligned with the policies of former President Donald Trump than with Pahlavi himself.

This statement arises amidst a backdrop of significant upheaval for the Iranian people who have faced a multi-faceted assault from their adversaries. The initial phase of this conflict was marked by the twelve-day war during which Israel and the United States launched military operations against Iran only to retreat and request a ceasefire in the face of fierce resistance.

Following military failures the adversaries resorted to psychological warfare including the unlawful activation of the ‘snapback mechanism’ and similar tactics. In December they attempted a quasi-coup which also ended in failure resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 2400 Iranian lives with around 700 killed during the unrest. The violence witnessed in the streets was unprecedented featuring gruesome acts such as murder with utility knives live burnings and indiscriminate shootings of pedestrians alongside attacks on mosques and desecration of the Quran by armed rioters.

In a notable shift both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly declared their support for the disturbances in Iran while Pahlavi urged his limited supporters to take to the streets and attack government buildings. An Israeli official even admitted that operatives from Mossad were conducting operations within Iran.

However the scenario did not unfold as anticipated in Tel Aviv and Washington. The astute Iranian populace discerned the enemy’s plans demonstrating their resistance on January 12 2025 with a massive nationwide gathering that sent a clear message against anti-Iranian forces.

Wittekoff’s assertion that Pahlavi is not pertinent to the Iranian situation further illustrates the diminishing influence of Trump who has failed to gain traction with the Iranian people and is now sidelining Pahlavi in his strategic considerations. Moreover this development suggests that the so-called opposition which advocates for foreign intervention in Iran is also being disregarded as Trump appears to overlook them as well.

Some analysts posit that Trump’s renewed interest in negotiating with Iran following the events of January 2025 indicates a realization that the Iranian nation is not one to be easily subdued.
